Marlow Bridge will undergo a fortnight-long inspection by Buckinghamshire Council next week to highlight structural issues and inform a new repairs programme.

Work on the Grade-I listed structure, which was built in 1832, will begin on Monday, May 20, with a closure in place between 8pm and 6am for five nights until Saturday, May 25.

The inspection was previously scheduled to begin on May 13 but was pushed back by a week to avoid clashing with Tom Kerridge’s Pub in the Park festival, which runs from May 16 to May 19.

While the council previously said the crossing would only be closed to motorists for one night at the beginning and end of the work, a spokesperson has now confirmed that multi-day closures will be enforced both while scaffolding is put up and as it is taken down.

Access will also be suspended for three nights ending on Tuesday, June 4, between the hours of 8pm and 6am.

Deputy Member for Transport Dominic Barnes previously told the Free Press that “some of the bearings” on the bridge were in need of repair and that “protecting and enhancing” the landmark structure was a priority for the council.

He added: “We would remind motorists to observe the diversions that will be put in place and thank people for their patience while we carry out these works; we will be aiming to keep disruption to a minimum.”
